Q: Why does Outlook Express display an attached picture as a small box with a little red x inside of it?
A: The reason this happens is because, by default, Outlook Express blocks any attachments that might contain viruses. This is an Outlook Express security feature, which is fine theoretically, but what good is an e-mail program if you can't open attachments or see photos?
To get rid of the little red x's, single-click on the <Tools> menu with your left mouse button, then single-click on the <Options> option.
In the Options Window, single-click on the <Security> tab. In the Virus Protection section you'll find the option, "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus". Beside this option is a box with a checkmark inside it, which indicates that this option is active. Single-click inside the box with your left mouse button to remove the checkmark.
Now, single-click on the <Apply> button to save your settings. Single-click on the <OK> button to close the window.
Once you have closed and reopened the Outlook Express program, you should be able to see images instead of the red x's. But remember: Outlook Express is no longer blocking anything that could contain a virus, so make sure you have an updated anti-virus program working on your computer that scans your attachments.
If you would like to test this setting I'll be happy to send you one of my own "fancy" stationery, with scrolling picture and music - the works! :o) .....Lilian
