Brag Night
Social Hour - October 8, 2010
Bring your Medals and Trophies.
Les and Joy Hargreaves compete in the annual BC Seniors Games as well as at seniors games in Arizona. Mostly in Tucson, but also in Green Valley and Sierra Vista.
Les' sport is Javelin and his selection includes Gold, Silver and Bronze which he has won over the years and are nicely mounted in a frame.
Joy's medals are for swimming. She does sprints (short races of 25 or 50 m) and relays. The medals she is showing in the picture are a selection of some she received the last three times she competed - Gold, Silver and Bronze. She has competed at 8 BC Seniors Games.
Dave Turner displaying his Curling trophies from years ago. Also 2 Bronze medals he won competing in Badminton at the 2005 BC Seniors Games.
There are also 2 little "Oscars" he and and Kay received for shows they participated in at BC Tel while both were employed there. As many of you know, Dave belongs to a group of entertainers here in the Valley and is still acting up. :o)
Jean Buchanan has attended the BC Seniors Games every year, (with two exceptions) since 1992 when they were held in Dawson Creek. Jean used to teach swimming in Coquitlam in her younger days so this is the event she naturally competes in.
The 50 and 100M Backstroke and 100, 200, 400 & 800M Free Style.
She never came home without medals - Usually Gold and a few Silver. She has a box full from which she has made some nice wind chimes for her daughters and wants to make some more for her grand & great - grand kids.
This year she came home with 6 Gold Medals plus 2 Bronze for a couple of relays she also swam, which are the medals she only shows here. She chuckles and says that she has now outlived the competition due to her competing in the over 90 age group!
"Not like Joy whose competition is very strong", she says. "Joy goes against former olympians and other strong swimmers."
Here at Coventry Woods Jean started the Pool exercises every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the summer and after 13 years is still leading the class every year - with the exception of 2009 when she broke a hip and then her wrist. All the while she also trains with Joy every week over at the Surrey Pool. What a role model she has been and continues to be at 90 years young.
